How it works:
IG Vienna organizes and covers travel expenses, accomodation and the participation fee for the European Forum Alpbach 2024.

Application – Step by Step
To apply for a scholarship, please fill out your personal data in the link below and upload a single PDF.
We can not accept incomplete applications.
Send us your document in the following order:
- CV (Important: without a picture!)
- Answer the four application questions entirely in English or entirely in German.
- If there is any other document you would like to show us and that you find relevant for your application, feel free to add it. Please just add only one (1) such document.
The application questions:
- What is one aspect of yourself that you feel is often misunderstood by others, and what would you like people to know about the genuine you?
(max. 150 words) - What is something you have taught yourself last year and what motivated you to do so? (max. 50 words)
- If you were an alien looking down to earth, what random aspect would make you wonder the most? (max. 50 words)
- Send us a page based on the following quote:

However, you don’t have to interpret it too literally. Requirements
- Connection to Vienna (e.g.: residence, school, study program in Vienna, workplace, etc.)
- Age limit: 18 to incl. 30 years (deadline 17.08.2025) – exception for university assistants, who may be up to 35 years old
- Attendance during the whole duration of the Forum (15.8. - 30.8.2025)
- Mandatory attendance of sponsoring events (approx. 3-4 events, that take place before, during, and/or after the Forum)
- Write a short report of one of the Events at the Forum (approx. 500 words) and send it to us after the Forum
- If your application is successful, we ask you to become a member of IG Vienna to receive your scholarship
- You have never received a scholarship for the European Forum Alpbach before
About our Scholarships
The Initiativegroup Alpbach Vienna (IG Wien) annually awards scholarships for the European Forum Alpbach (EFA) to young people who have a connection to Vienna, e.g. who live, work or study here (or have done so in the past).
The scholarship holders are selected by the Board of IG Wien, whereby we place particular emphasis on diversity in socio-economic background and education, creativity, critical and independent thinking and extracurricular activities.
Our scholarships are available to all who can provide proof of the listed criteria and submit their application within the application period, starting in March 2024.

We place particular emphasis on socio-economic background, creativity, critical/ independent thinking, volunteer work and diversity. Our aim is to follow our founding idea of bringing a critical and diverse group of scholarship holders to the Forum Alpbach to challenge the status quo.

How are the scholarship holders selected?
The Board of IG Wien decides in each case (based on the completeness of the application documents and fulfillment of the formal application criteria) jointly, unanimously in the course of a selection process lasting several days.
What should I pay special attention to in the layout of the CV and text, as well as in answering the questions?
Stick exactly to the information given. We explicitly do not want any photos in the CV, the texts should not exceed the maximum length and the application should in any case reach us in time. We give positive weight to social, cultural and political engagement as well as professional experience of our applicants. Furthermore, we refer to our guiding principle of diversity, which we want to carry to Alpbach as well as to live in our IG and its composition.
And last but not least: You and your personality are asked! It is not necessary to prove knowledge or to meet supposed (academic) requirements. Rather, when answering the questions and in your text, bring in your personal associations, inspirations, your personal knowledge, your experiences and your views and backgrounds in an uncomplicated way and at your own discretion!
Does IG Wien award partial scholarships?
No, a scholarship of IG Wien covers the entire period of the European Forum Alpbach. IG Wien does not award "partial scholarships" for the participation in individual events or modules.
The Forum’s program can be intense – this is why everyone can decide which events they want to participate in or if they would rather take a break and enjoy the mountains of Alpbach. Nevertheless, scholarship holders are obliged to stay in Alpbach for the whole period of the event (No belated arrivals or early departures).
Are double and multiple applications to different IGs / other Clubs and directly to the European Forum Alpbach possible?
Double and multiple applications must be announced when applying and do not have a negative impact on your application. However, if you accept a scholarship from another club, IG Vienna reserves the right to prioritize other applicants.
All Alpbach clubs are part of the Forum Alpbach Network. We offer similar opportunities in Alpbach and work closely together.
To what extent do the scholarships of the individual Clubs / those of the European Forum Alpbach differ?
The scholarships of individual clubs can differ partly in scope (travel, accommodation...), regarding the individual club activities and the exact period of stay at Alpbach. You can find more information on the websites of the individual clubs or IGs.
Are there different scholarships for Bachelor, Master, PhD or Diploma students or graduates?
No, the scope of the scholarships is the same for all applicants.
Important: University studies are NOT required in order to apply for a scholarship. We are looking for applications from interesting personalities regardless of educational/academic background.
Will there be Returner Scholarships?
IG Vienna is working to determine if it is possible Returner Scholarships.
What is included in a scholarship from IG Wien?
As a scholarship holder of IG Vienna, you receive a full scholarship. This means that IG Vienna is covering travel costs (within Austria), ticket fees for the European Forum Alpbach, as well as accommodation in our beloved "Haus Schneider", located directly in the center of Alpbach.
For this we require that you become a member of IG Vienna (membership fee 15€) and a deposit of 150€, which will be returned to you after attending the Forum with us.
Please be aware that the costs of food and additional expenses are not covered by the scholarship. There is a kitchen available in your apartment, so you can prepare your own food. If that’s an obstacle to you, feel free to contact us.
